Zoom Webinar

In July 2021, I discussed my ongoing project, Garment Girl, which investigates women’s labor in the global textile industry.

My co-presenter was Dr. Mila Rosenthal, a human rights educator and professor at the Institute for the Study of Human Rights at Columbia University. She spoke about the March 8 Textile Factory, a significant site for the Vietnamese Communist Party’s efforts in the 1960s and 1970s to manufacture a modern socialist society, economy, city, and family.

Michal Teague, Design Studies lecturer at RMIT Hanoi City campus, moderated the discussion.

In 2019, I discussed Garment Girl at The Future of Creativity in Vietnam conference in Hà Nội, co-organized by RMIT University, the Vietnam National Institute of Culture and Arts Studies, and the United Nations Vietnam.

Abby Chitty Interviews Jennifer Vanderpool for Voice of Vietnam, Hà Nội, Việt Nam, May 2018

VITV (Vietnam Internet Television) Interview – May 2018 from Jennifer Vanderpool on Vimeo.

The invitation to exhibit at Heritage Space, Hà Nội, Việt Nam, brought me back to my grandmother’s and mom’s stories about working in a sweatshop.

Garment Girl, 2018, Exhibition Opening, Heritage Space, Hà Nội, Việt Nam

Talking with my mom about her sweatshop job transporting clothing items from seamstress to seamstress in the progressive bundle system, Garment Girl interlaced my matrilineal family stories of struggle with current labor activism through asking questions about the unseen garment workers who produce the clothes we wear. I developed Garment Girl to tell a transnational narrative that thematized women’s labor in the global textile industry, emphasizing Vietnamese refugees who worked in Los Angeles sweatshops and those currently working in Hà Nội.

Garment Girl, 2018, Exhibition Opening, Heritage Space, Hà Nội, Việt Nam

Garment Girl included videos with stories told by garment makers in Los Angeles and Hà Nội. Like my mother and her friends’ decades before, I heard stories from these women about working long hours for poverty wages, developing illnesses from dirty work environments, and only knowing the beach through popular culture. They have little time for relaxation because of family responsibilities and “homework,” sewing after hours to meet quotas that often involve their children’s participation.

Garment Girl, 2018, Exhibition Opening, Heritage Space, Hà Nội, Việt Nam

I interwove the seamstresses’ narratives with interviews I conducted with labor scholars and activists in both locations advocating for safe working and living conditions for women garment & apparel industry workers as well as rescuing children trafficked from rural communities to work in urban sweatshops.

To create the exhibition compositions, I abstracted designs from my grandmother’s vintage clothing to use as motifs in the images. These decorative patterns highlighted the vignettes of laborers’ working juxtaposed with imaginary ones of leisurely afternoons at the beach.
